Looks can certainly be deceiving and this reigns particularly true for UK crooner, Jessie J. Her quirky style might be misleading but the moment you hear her soulful voice you are taken a back and can't help but sing along to her catchy yet heartfelt tunes.
Born Jessica Cornish, Jessie J rose to fame writing and composing music for other artists such as Chris Brown and former Disney Channel star, Miley Cyrus. Jessie has certainly paid her dues. In a recent interview she relives how she got to the point where she is now:
"It hasn’t been easy. I think back to the early days. Days of wanting to be signed. Days of being left with no deal. Yet, these are the things you have to go through to be the kind of artist you want to be. The type of artist who survives in this industry. I’m glad I went through that struggle, though. Because it’s made me the person I am now and the person I need to be in order to have longevity."
Jessie J was born with an irregular heartbeat and suffered a minor stroke at the age of 18 however this did not stop or hinder her success it motivated her and she found inspiration in this, which can be heard on her 13-track debut album "Who You Are" which has been certified platinum in the UK and has sprawled three singles: Do It Like A Dude, Price Tag and Nobody's Perfect. Jessie announced her next single would be Who's Laughing Now the song deals the universal theme of overcoming haters and bullies.
The 23-year old is a fashion icon in her own right with her signature star-studded lips she was asked to be on the cover of YRB. She reveals in the magazine that one of her biggest goals is too write music that will stand the test of time. "I wanted to write a song that I knew could be played next week or in 10 years time and people would still like it." The soulful yet edgy singer and songwriter caused many a jaw to drop when she showed up to the Glamour Awards looking breathtakingly beautiful in a black sequined Dolce & Gabbana dress.
Jessie J has a positive outlook on life and this attitude reflects in her music. Her music tells a story of self-acceptance, love, peace and equality. Some songs make you want to cry while others leave you a little teary-eyed.
