Monica tries to breathe New
Life into her 7th studio album and quite frankly fails dismally.
Her departure from J Records, (Monica’s previous record label) to RCA supposedly gave Monica a sense of rebirth. While recording the album the R&B starlet felt inspired, to talk about strength, family, unity and growth she even tweeted: “Don’t be afraid of new things, new people, new opportunities or new love. It just may give you a New Life.”
Yet somehow New Life
leaves me underwhelmed. Even her duet with Brandy on It All Belongs To Me comes nowhere near to their 1998 masterpiece,
The Boy Is Mine. As a cohesive unit, New Life doesn't show Monica’s growth as a
singer/songwriter. Unlike her previous album Still Standing, the songs on New
Life are generic and repetitive almost forgetful.
Standout
Tracks: Cry and Time To Move On
Reminiscent of Keri Hilson’s Make Love, Monica provides a shoulder to Cry on. The R&B ballad
was written and produced by Salaam Remi and Bust
Your Windows singer, Jazmine Sullivan.
Time
To Move On simultaneously captures the soulful sound of Percy Sledge and Michael
Jackson’s Motown hit, Who’s Loving You.
